Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite for globetrotters

Many travelers don’t think twice about moving from one time zone to another, whether traveling for business or leisure. The Senator Cosmopolite is designed to meet the complex demands of today’s globetrotters. First introduced in 2015 in red and white gold versions, this year the cosmopolitan masterpiece from Glashütte Original is available in elegant stainless steel as well. With its innovative time zone mechanism, which displays the time of day or night at home and destination in each of the 35 world time zones currently in use, the Saxon manufactory wraps all the time in the world around the globetrotter’s wrist. This exceptional timepiece is available immediately from all Glashütte Original Boutiques and from selected dealers.

With its minimalistic design and its innovative time zone mechanism, the latest version of the Senator Cosmopolite from Glashütte Original proves the ideal companion for contemporary cosmopolitans and world explorers. Just in time for the start of the travel season, the timepiece presented to great acclaim this last spring is now available worldwide.

Essential design for modern world travelers

The latest interpretation of the Senator Cosmopolite is executed in Glashütte Original’s characteristic clear style, and has a distinctively contemporary look and feel. Dark blue poire hands follow their paths above the matte white dial, passing new blue Arabic numerals and indexes with nonchalant ease. Black details in the various displays offer elegant accents. Two slender windows are positioned harmoniously in the curve of the dial at 8 o’clock; they indicate the destination in the form of IATA codes for international airports in one of three colours, taking Daylight Saving and Standard Time into account. The newly designed day/night display with a small sun and stylised sky is positioned at 9 o’clock. The 44 mm diameter stainless steel case features alternately satin-brushed and highly polished surfaces, stylishly enhanced by a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with pin buckle or foldover clasp.

Path breaking mechanics

With the Senator Cosmopolite one can set the time of day or night in two time zones at once, without the wearer having to make any calculations himself. A single time zone ring offers a choice of all 35 world time zones currently in use, each presented by using an official IATA code for an international airport located in the relevant time zone.

Of the 35 official time zones, the 24 that are offset from Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) by full hour intervals are displayed using a black IATA code in the window at 8 o’clock. A further 8 time zones offset from GMT by half-hour intervals are represented by blue IATA codes, and the three remaining time zones with three-quarters of an hour offsets are identified by red IATA codes; the colour coding allows the wearer to determine the GMT offset at a glance.

Two windows at 8 o’clock make it possible to differentiate between summer (Daylight Saving Time – DST) or standard time (Standard Time – STD). It is also easy to see if it is day or night at home and destination. Any necessary adjustments of the date while traveling forwards or back in time are handled by the movement’s intricate mechanics.

The 89-02 movement – developed in-house in Glashütte – is comprised of over 400 individual parts, has an off-centre rotor, beats at 4 Hertz, and features a power reserve of at least 72 hours. The oscillation system is regulated using four golden screws on the balance rim: the absence of a regulator on the balance spring allows the movement to run continuously for a markedly longer period, which results in even greater precision.

Intuitive operation

The Senator Cosmopolite’s unusual mechanism is set in motion when the traveler wishes to set the time at destination: if traveling east (forwards in time), he turns the crown at 4 o’clock clockwise until the IATA code indicating the destination time zone appears in the corresponding DST or STD window. If heading west (back in time), the wearer turns the crown counter-clockwise. In both cases the central hour and minute hands jump forwards or back in 15-minute segments until the IATA code for the destination is visible in the corresponding DST or STD window.

At this point the globetrotter needs to make no further changes: the central hour and minute hands indicate the correct time at destination, complemented by the correct day/night indication at 9 o’clock and by the display of the correct date at the traveler’s destination.
