It’s not every day that you come across a young watch brand that has something truly unique to offer. Last year we got in touch with Michiel Holthinrichs and his Ornament 1 watch which he presented to us proudly. Michiel is the son of an artist and an automotive engineer. This made him grow up in an inspiring environment of art and classic cars. Giving him a strong imagination and a passion for both design and technology. Something that clearly shows in his watches.
When talking to him you can clearly see the dedication and his enthusiasm for what he does. All of his passion visibly supported by the drawing books where his design come together. His passion for watchmaking has been around a long time. Spending most, if not all, of his earnings into acquiring and restoring mechanical watches. His extensive collection and architectural background inspired him to create his own watches. All of which are based on the values design, technology and craftsmanship. Today we’ll have a look at the Holthinrichs Ornament 1 Delft Blue Limited Edition.
3D printed in steel
When we say truly unique this has to do with the fact that this watch is actually 3D printed form surgical steel. When we first heard about it we raised an eyebrow to be honest. But 3D printing gives you possibilities for designs which are near impossible to create the conventional way. Something that shows clearly when you look closer at the Holthinrichs Ornament 1. Although the watch has a clearly classic design at first sight. When you start to look at the details you notice how well thought this watch has been designed. Besides that it’s quite impressive to see the amount of work that goes into the creation and steps needed to finish a single watch case. From the raw 3D printed watch parts a long process follows to finish a single watch which is fully finished by hand.
“Because of the characteristics of 3D printing all separate parts of the watch have to be manually aligned before we are able to post-process them. A challenging task, but when done right it contributes to the quality of the watch and the legitimacy of the design.” Carlo Vangompel, specialist in precision machining
So from the front it looks like a pretty standard classic watch but as soon as you admire it from the sides you’ll notice the rich details. The case is mostly skeletonised which gives it it’s special character. Opposite of the crown side you will find the brands name displayed. When looking at the difference in finish you will see the contrast between the polished surface and the rough 3D print. Realise that the entire case looks like this when it’s produced. All of the outer surfaces have to be intensively polished and as this is all done by hand not a single watch will be exactly identical to the other.
Ornament 1 Delft Blue
For the Holthinrichs Ornament 1 Delft Blue Limited Edition a white and ‘Delft Blue’ dial has been created. This is done to pay tribute of the hometown of this watch brand that is based in Delft which is known for it’s white and blue ceramics all over the globe. The movement for this watch is based on the ETA 7001 movement which has been extensively decorated. Again these details are linked to Delft as they show a bird which can be found in many traditional Delft Blue designs.
With a carefully chosen case size of 38mm the Ornament 1 is a nice classic looking watch. Due to the manufacturing with al the openings in the case it’s a lightweight watch that wears very comfortable. Overal we’re quite impressed with the design and production proces which is unique in the watch industry as far as we’ve seen. All the hard work does come with a price tag as the Ornament 1 Delft Blue will set you back 4.479 EuroFull details can be found on the Holthinrichs website.
