The Certina DS-1 history goes back in the late 1950s. At that time the mountaineers that first climbed on the Dhaulagiri in the Himalaya had a Certina DS-1 on their wrists. Today you may discover a replica and two new DS-1 watches.
If you are looking for good Swiss Made mechanical wristwatch equipped with a Swiss Made automatic calibre for almost no money, these are watches I want to recommend you.
The new Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 is powered – nomen eat omens – by the ETA Calibre Powermatic 80. The latter offers a power reserve of 80 hours. The Powermatic 80 calibre is reliable and that what I today would call “state of the art” in the entry price level.
The 316L-steel case has a diameter of 40 mm, is waterproof to 100 meters and features a curved sapphire glas that is treated to be antireflective.
You may choose in-between a version with a silver and a black dial. Additional there is the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 – Himalaya Special Edition dedicated to the conquest of the 8167 meter high Dhaulagiri summit in 1960.
Now look at this… These prices are very attractive!
For the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 with the silver or black dial you only spend 650 Euro including 20 % VAT. For the version with the metal strap you spend 685 Euro including 20 % VAT.
For the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 – Himalaya Special Edition you spend 695 Euro including 20 % VAT and 725 Euro including 20 % VAT for the version with a metal strap.
Not bad at all! For a good looking, 100 percent Swiss Made wristwatch really not bad at all, especially when considering the quality of the watch and its “state of the art” ETA-calibre.

Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80 – Himalaya Special Edition

„Dhaulagiri, 8167 m, 1960“ and „CERTINA Mechanical Watches since 1888”, this is what you read on the glas and the winding rotor of the DS-1 …

This is how the 19060s Certina DS-1 looked like:

I know that Rolex Explorer was used by the mountaineers in the Himalayas, but was not aware about usage of Certina by the mountaineers.
