Where Jaquet Droz is known for it’s highly complicated automations which date back to the 1700’s. They also create very basic yet well designed watches. We recently visited them in their headquarter in La Chaux-de-Fonds where many watch brands are located. Today we’re having a look at the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Satin-Brushed.
When looking at the Grande Seconde collection you will find many variations. From a pocket watch all the way to a wrist watch with a tourbillon. However this is one of the most basic versions it’s been very elegantly executed. Still the infinty or 8 shaped layout is very clearly visible with the separated small time display and large seconds. Something that originates from the pocket watch designed by Jaquet Droz in 1784.
Well chosen dimensions
Where we see many watches created in larger diameters. We still consider 40mm as the perfect size for a watch as a rule of thumb. With a case size of 39mm this watch will fit most wrists and it’s a well chosen dimension. For bigger wrists it’s also available in 43mm but the smaller version has our preference. This version of the Grande Seconde Quantième is made from stainless steel. Other executions are also available in 18k gold.
On the satin-brushed or sunburst dial you will find the small time display at 12 o’clock and the large seconds at 6 o’clock. The less is more aesthetic is well implemented in the design. On the small time display there are nicely shaped hour markers and 10 minute markers for the small seconds. This gives it a clean look and the boundaries has a finely printed minute track. Something which give the dial a better shape. The applied markers are all made from white gold.
Elegant date display
Displayed on the edge of the small seconds dial, which has a little angle, there is a date indication. A small second hand with a red tip points out the current date. This elegant way of showing the right day of the month suits the watch very well compared to the typical display window in the dial.
Encased and visible through the sapphire caseback is the Jaquet Droz 2660Q2.P caliber. The movement is nicely striped finished and comes with a skeletonised rotor which has a matte and brushed finish. Thanks to a double barrel this watch comes with a power reserve of about 68 hours. Because of the silicon balance spring and pallet horns this watch is better resistant to shocks, influences by temperature and most importantly magnetic fields. These can cause big issues to the precision of a mechanical movement.
All together the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Quantième Satin-Brushed makes a great watch. Both configurations we’ve had in our hands looked great. The darker anthracite version comes with rhodium-plated steel hands where the light grey version has blued steel hands. As aforementioned each version is available with a diameter of 39 or 43 millimeters. The anthracite version comes on a light brown alligator strap and the light grey version has a slate gray alligator strap.
