That´s not a bad idea at all! Why not using the huge surface of a watchstrap to display information coming from a smart-phone? I invite you as the very first ones to discover the new e-Strap …

So this morning at 10:00 CET I got an email from Jérôme Lambert, the CEO of Montblanc, in which he wishes me a happy new year and in which he presents me his newest high-tech gadget or as Montblanc would probably call it: High-tech Lifestyle Companion.

Everybody talks about smart-phones and smart-watches and there we go here is Montblanc with a first and clever approach. Did you expect Montblanc presenting such a device? Honestly, I did not.

By the way the e-Strap was developed at the Montblanc-HQ in Hamburg in Germany from a young team of engineers being in charge of developing high-tech gadgets for Montblanc. It is manufactured in Hongkong for Montblanc. The strap is part of Jérôme´s universal strategy for Montblanc, he now also pushes intensively intelligent-digital developments for the brand.

Have a look and PLEASE tell me what you think.

The new Montblanc e-Strap device offers a variety of functionality:

Smart notifications, signalled by vibrations provide an alert of incoming communication without the need to look at the smartphone. It enables the preview of e-mails by topic and sender, read text messages; see incoming calls and status updates of social media feeds or reminders of important upcoming meetings, all on the wrist.

The activity tracker is a simple tool to monitor the wearer ́s physical activity over time and keep track of his personal daily goals. To do so, it measures the number of steps taken per day, calories burnt and the distance travelled. The accompanying smartphone application enables of the progress per week and month. The e-Strap will remind the wearer to stay active through unobtrusive vibration alerts and show at a glance the daily progress.

The Montblanc e-Strap remote controls are useful for controlling the smartphone with the e-Strap. The camera remote enables the taking of pictures with the smartphone by triggering the shutter with a tap on the e-Strap thus allowing better and easier selfies or group shots.

Playing, pausing, and skipping music on the smartphone can be also remotely steered with the music control function of the e-Strap.

Additionally, the Find-Me function allows searching for the watch or phone within a range of up to 30 meters, either by tapping on the e-Strap to find the smartphone or by using the smartphone application to find the watch.

Montblanc E-Strap press release

The e-Strap device has an inbuilt touch screen display, readable in daylight, to display the information and navigate through the functionalities. The technical device is encapsulated in a stainless steel case with rubber protection and can be easily fixed and adjusted with the pass-through strap.

Depending on usage, the device needs to be recharged every five days using a standard micro-USB cable.

The e-Strap is compatible with Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, Note 4, selected Android Devices running Android 4.3 and upwards as well as Apple iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6 and 6 plus.

The strap is made out of the Montblanc Extreme Leather. The wristband was created by the Montblanc Pelleteria in Florence. Due to its innovative manufacturing process, the upper surface of the leather wristband has a characteristic carbon appearance. In a long and meticulous process, the leather is textured and simultaneously impregnated with an innovative treatment that does not only coat the surface of the wristband, but also bonds with it and increases its structural strength. This innovative technique produces a high-performance and innovative leather, delivering abrasion resistance, water repellence and heat wear-, water- and fire-resistant.

The Montblanc e-Strap device can be fixed and adjusted with the pass-through to all strap sizes 20/22 mm.

  • Brilliant idea. Why not take it one step further and integrate it to the world time function so that the settable default display could for instance be weather update or time in a 2nd zone.

  • Indeed an innovative approach. Yet as others already said, it will be about its performance and I wonder how a 40x14x9mm evenly shaped block on the bottom of my wrist would feel like. Maybe curved would help?

Hard to say, but in the specs it’s not clear if splash proof means that you can safely wash your hands?
I understands benefits of a small monochrome displays, but colours and useful sizes are nice, too. Btw. how scratch resistant is the screen at such a neuralgic spot resp. the rubber casing.

Maybe all things that need assessment in a review report.

    Keep on writing

  • Interesting approach!
but finally the performance ot the device will decide. Personally I would prefer to wear it on the other wrist, simply because this would avoid any limitation in changing the watch…

  • Creative idea, Smart Watches are becoming a part of our life and you’ve to adept to it. Smart move from Montblanc!

  • Congratulations for Montblanc to be the first traditional luxury watch brand to join Luxius Suisse in the luxury smart watch segment!

  • What a clever move! Instead of either real or smart watch just smarten the strap! Montblanc really boosts!

  • This looks like a very smart idea for people that use a real watch, don’t want to trade in their watch for a smart watch. Can this be used for other
watch brands, I own a Jeager LeCoutre and don’t want to buy a Montblanc.

  • Clever idea indeed, but I fear it will be only a very small percentage of Montblanc buyers that will go for this solution.
