Ladies and gentlemen this is a beautiful solid ceramic timepiece. Nothing comparable has ever been introduced to the universe of Swiss watchmaking. Well done Omega, well done! Click on “read more” to get the story…
March 25, during Baselworld 2014, I was among the very first worldwide to publish pictures of this new Omega timepiece.
Do you remember the story? No? Ok, then please click >>> HERE <<< to see it.
While this new grey Speedmaster boasts a look similar to its alluring counterpart, the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, it features several design elements that distinguish it from any other model the brand has ever introduced.
Inspired by the lunar dust that captured mankind’s first and last steps on the Moon, the shimmering Speedmaster is crafted from white ceramic that has been transformed through-and-through to shimmering metallic grey. This transformation is made in a high-temperature plasma furnace.
The white case material is subjected to 20,000 degrees Celsius for three hours in the plasma-heating chamber containing different gases. This process causes the white ceramic material finally to turn grey.
The case, case back, bezel, crown, pushers and buckle of this 44.25 mm timepiece are crafted from the same ceramic material. Engraved on the case-back is the name of the watch: “GREY SIDE OF THE MOON”.
Distinguishing the Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon is the Super-LumiNova tachymetric scale on the brushed ceramic bezel – another first from Omega. The numbers and marks on the bezel have been engraved and filled with Super-LumiNova making it possible for the wearer to read the tachymeter scale in a variety of lighting conditions. The Ω-symbol on the crown is also filled with Super-LumiNova.
The sandblasted 950 platinum dial gives the Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon a more elegant and classic look while underscoring the craftsmanship that went into creating the watch. Two integrated platinum sub-dials distinguish the timepiece from its legendary predecessor, Omega’s Moonwatch. These two sub-dials are made possible by the innovative placement of the 12-hour and 60-minute counters on the same sub-dial at 3 o’clock position, allowing a comfortable and intuitive chronograph reading. The black plated central chronograph seconds hand has a red tip and is coated with white Super-LumiNova, as are the central hour and minute hands, indexes and two dots at 12 o’clock. A box-form scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the impressive dial with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.
The Co-Axial-calibre – in my eyes one of the best chronograph movements of the industry – is equipped with an Si14-silicon-balance-spring.
The Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon comes with a grey leather strap and has a rubber insert with holes on the area where the buckle is fastened. On the underside of the strap there is red stitching that complements the red accents on the Omega Co-Axial calibre 9300 visible through the bevelled sapphire crystal case-back.
The Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon is sold with a full four-year warranty and is delivered in a special presentation box for 9330 Euro including 20 % VAT in Austria.
Almost as sexy as the dark side of the moon. If the background of the date would be grey too instead of crying white the watch could come close to perfection(IMHO).
I have told Omega this already when I first saw the watch at Baselworld
love it. dark side of the moon + this watch + 45th anniversary watch were all winners in my view.
stunning peace. Lets see when a limited edition is coming and the Master Co Axial will be introduced.
The 9300 calibre is not yet transformed to Master-Co-Axial but Omega is working on it
Undeniably the best looking ceramic….a must have piece…good job.
Wow, wow, wow! Beautiful!
Outstanding! It looks absolutely marvelous.
Well done Omega.
(No wonder I love the brand.)
PS: Would love to see a picture of the back.
A 39 or 40 mm size would be impressive.
Omega can always be trusted to create truly outstanding timepieces.
No wonder, Omega is one of the most popular watch brands on earth.
Beautiful, but I would have liked them to make it a MASTER version.
The 9300 calibre is not yet transformed to Master-Co-Axial
Holy crap that’s gorgeous…
