Richard Mille RM 70-01 Tourbillon Alain Prost

Partnering up with Alain Prost was reason for Richard Mille to create a special watch. Being an artist in the realm of speed where Richard Mille is the artist in timekeeping. Collaborating with the four-time Formula 1 World Champion and co-founder of the Renault e.dams team unveils shared interests. When they learn cycling being a shared passion this was the perfect inspiration fot the Richard Mille RM 70-01 Tourbillon Alain Prost.

Afte extensive discussions with Alain Prost and other cyclists Richard Mille realised that one special function would be essential. Having a display of the kilometres cycled since the beginning of a season. With totaliser on the Richard Mille RM 70-01 Tourbillon Alain Prost the solution is there. On the top of the dial there is a display showing the overall distance travelled.

Witht the pusher at 2 o’clock you can select any of the 5 rollers of the odometer which is visible in a titanium frame. Once the correct roller is selected, pressing the pusher 10 o’clock will forward the roller by one. All you have to do is add the total amount by the end of the day and you are up to date.

The mechanism itself is much more complicated. The first pusher activates the selected roller. Execution is con rmed by perfect alignment of the two yellow arrows. The second pusher incrementally rotates the roller, which automatically blocks, thanks to the carry mechanism. To avoid accidental manipulations, the complication has been fitted with a neutral position (N). Thanks to a spring-lock, the selection fork will be lined up straight. With an arrow at 2 o’clock pointing to N as visual confirmation that the mechanism is locked.

Inspiration from cycling

Besides the large distance dispaly at the top there is a small power reserve indicatore hidden at 5 o’clock. Sitting right next to the tourbillon you can read out how much of the 70 hours power reserve is still available. Baseplate and bridges are all made in grade 5 titanium. With the blink of an eye it is linked to cycling once more. Saying the calibre can withstand the roughest trails with ease as in the realm of cycling.

Inspiration from cycling goes a long way with the design also. From the titanium Allen screws that x the bridges, to the barrel ratchet, which recalls the design of forged wheel spokes. The tourbillon cage and dynamometric crown, evocative of a bicycle’s pedal. As with many things the beauty lies in the details and they have been well looked into.

Combining shapes

Up next is the case to have a look at. Fully machined out of Carbon TPT® material it combines tonneau, rectangular and asymmetrical shapes in one. The shape stands out for sure and it is created to ensure the greatest possible comfort on the wrist. In the mean time having an optimised legibility of the time when gripping a cycle’s handlebars. As always at Richard Mille, function dictates form.

In order that they may fully enjoy the dynamic and mechanical qualities of the RM 70-01, each buyer will receive as a gift their very own bespoke road cycle. Developed by Alain Prost and Richard Mille in partnership with the prestigious Italian bikemaker Colnago, these individually numbered bicycles are made by hand and painted in the watchmaking brand’s colours.
