A short introduction to Dornblüth & Sohn

Dornblüth & Sohn in-house caliber manufactured in Kalbe in Saxony

We all appreciate the variety of in-house movements produced in Glashütte in Saxony. Let me present you the “Q-2010 Klassik” and “Q-2010 Auf & Ab” in-house calibers of Dornblüth & Sohn located in Kalbe in Saxony

Dornblüth & Sohn is a family business. Already in 1959 Dieter Dornblüth designed his first movement. His son Dirk Dornblüth recently did the same by introducing his two first in-house calibers.

“Q-2010 Klassik” & “Q-2010 Auf & Ab” (= the classical 3-hands-timepiece with the additional integrated power reserve indicator): diameter 34.3 mm • height 4,7 mm • 29 rubies • power reserve 52 hours • 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2,5 Hz) • in-house developed and created movement • double barrel with indirect driven, visible Maltese cross spring for almost linear torque of the power to the movement (patent pending) • classic short anchor escapement with a lower escape wheel • red gold plated, grained three-quarter plate with yellow gold plated hand-engraving of manufactory name and serial number • retracing ratchet • sunburst finish on winding wheels • Glucydur screw balance with Nivarox-1-Breguet-spring • swan-neck fine adjustment on the hand-engraved balance cock • screws flat polished, heat-blued, with beveled edges

Case: steel polished / burnished, double screw union • diameter 38.5 mm • height 10.0 mm • 1.0 mm sapphire glass on top, slightly domed and anti reflected inside • screwed sapphire glass base • oversized crown with embossed manufactory name

Dial: engraved brass dial with the grained, silky matte finished surface of historical ship chronometers • engraving technique in the tradition of old precision pendulum clocks • black engraving

Screws: flat polished, heat-blued with beveled edges

I liked the watches and must admit that I was surprised to see such a sophisticated movement in them. Since on the original provided pictures from Dornblüth & Sohn you don´t see the grained structure of the dial I tried to make some photos to show you its true beauty. Light conditions were not ideal so forgive me the mediocre quality of my photos this time.

What you will see are first the official pictures of the two Dornblüth & Sohn watches and then those I took yesterday in Munich at Munichtime.

  • Love the workmanship. Wish they would make some Roman Numeral models,

    and slightly larger cases,…say 45mm .

  • Alex you are a man of your word! Thanks for the write up and the photos… I find the designs and craftsmanship very appealing. I really like the 99.3 and the regulator designs… The strike a cord with me.

    Thanks!

  • These watches look truly fabulous and, unlike some others, I like the size 38.5 mm!

In fact I think, 40+ mm watches are way too large for us ordinary folks, unless you have a physique like Sly Stallone. But unfortunately, 40+ mm watches are most popular nowadays.

Moreover, thanks a lot for the nice report and lovely pictures!

  • The same opinion as I did about Nomos Lambda and Lux, : Please watchmakers no more “concept” watches, this is the way.
    Thanks Alexander

  • What a Beauty. What a pity though that these guys are doing this kind of watch in 38.5 mm or like IWC in 43 mm and never in 40 mm!!!
