The new Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H (PAM531)

Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H (PAM531)

This is a 44 mm Panerai in a steel case with a new in-house calibre being designed for travelers who want to read the actual time in a second timezone from a 24-hour-scale.

The Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT 24H is the first watch from Officine Panerai to adopt a new manufacture movement, the automatic P.9003 calibre. It is a development based on the P.9001 calibre.

The main innovation relates to the so-called GMT function, which is indicated over 24 hours instead of 12 hours. The P.9003 also features a newly designed circular power reserve indicator on the back of the watch, which is visible through the sapphire crystal in the case back.

The P.9003 offers a power reserve of three days, achieved by two spring barrels connected in series. Is the watch being worn the oscillating mass winds in both directions, making the automatic winding mechanism very efficient.

In terms of setting time, the main hour hand – that is also connected to the date – can be moved independently and in jumps of one hour, without interfering with the minute and seconds hands. But when setting the time a device which stops the balance wheel and sets the seconds hand to zero comes into operation, so that time can be synchronised e. g. with a GPS reference time-signal.

The outermost part of the typical Luminor-dial carries the figures and indexes to correctly read the second zonetime that is indicated by the big hand with the arrow.

So the little hand at 9 o’clock is indicating the seconds and the big hand with the arrow is showing a second time zone ?

    Nice. I like it.

And that isn’t a bad price. Especially for a new manufacture caliber.

How interesting, the power reserve indicator is located on the back of the watch instead of the front, where it usually is.
