3. Wempe Glashütte I/SA Zeitmeister Annual Calendar
On the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Wempe Glashütte I/SA wristwatch chronometers, the Hamburg-based company is presenting the Zeitmeister Annual Calendar. Limited to 100 pieces, this Annual Calendar with a self-winding movement is considered to be the most complicated watch of the Wempe Zeitmeister range. It is also the world’s first annual calendar with a German chronometer certification. In addition to the central hour, minute and second indicators, the self-winding movement supplies four more pieces of calendar data — the date, the day of the week, the month and the moon phase.
Providing all the details of a full year on a watch that is only 42 millimeters in diameter calls above all for a clear design. To convey all of this information, the Zeitmeister Annual Calendar relies on separate subdials known as “totalizers.” The date is read off at three o’clock, the day of the week at nine o’clock and the month at twelve o’clock. A depiction of the moon phase on a midnight-blue sky full of golden stars lies behind a cut-out opening in the dial. It shows not just the current state of the moon but also whether it is waxing or waning. The moon phase is positioned at six or eighteen hours — the moment in the morning or evening hours when the moon rises or sets.
The 42-millimeter Zeitmeister case of stainless steel with deep-drawn horns and rounded sides shows a deliberate emphasis on wearing comfort and ease of use. Adjustments to the calendar, which are only necessary once a year, are made with four separate rapid-setting controls located on the case flanks, flush with the surface. The screw-down case back has a high-relief engraving of the Glashütte Observatory and the numbering of the 100 pieces of this limited edition.
