Piaget Calibre 9P

I am sure many of you did read my article about the Piaget Altiplano 900P, the world´s thinnest mechanical watch. But this is only one record and unmatched proof of Piaget´s creativity. Let´s look back: It all started with the Calibre 9P in 1957…

But guys this was not just a single shot by Piaget. The brands history in producing ultra-thin calibres reaches back to the year 1957, when Piaget presented the Calibre 9P.

I thought you might be interested to learn more and you might like the list I put together for you. Both should give you an overview of all the ultra-thin calibres manufactured by Piaget.

Suffice it to say, this is an interesting part of the history of the Swiss watch industry  …

Founded in 1874 in La Côte-aux-Fées in the Swiss Jura, the Manufacture Piaget immediately established itself thanks to the precision, the sturdiness and the reliability of its movements. In 1957, the Manufacture played a pioneering role by presenting its first ultra-thin movement, the Calibre 9P (just 2 mm thin), one of the world’s thinnest mechanical hand-wound movements.

In 1960 came another feat with the creation of Calibre 12P, one of the thinnest automatic movements in the world (2.3 mm) – an accomplishment made possible by the ingenious integration of an offset micro-rotor, a peerless technical accomplishment at the time in the field of ultra-thin watchmaking. Ultra-thin movements thus became a brand signature, one of its undisputed strongholds, by enabling it to express its creativity.

This is because these miniature masterpieces are not just a token of peerless technical prowess; they are naturally designed and developed to ensure seamless integration within the case. Thanks to their slenderness and to their diminutive size, ultra-thin movements give the Piaget designers scope for all manner of daring options: ultra-thin cases, hard stone dials, jewellery watches, coin watches, special-shaped cases, etc. In 1998, the Manufacture re-launched its iconic Altiplano line, entirely dedicated to these movements. The mastery of ultra-thin watchmaking thus lies at the very core of the identity that Piaget has been cultivating for half a century in a close-knit alliance between technical and aesthetic aspects. It has also enabled Piaget to earn benchmark status within the narrow circle of fully integrated watch Manufactures.

    One question. The thinnest hand wound mechanical movement Piaget has made is the 9P at 2mm, is that correct? If so, then the Jaeger LeCoultre 849 (and the 839 that it is based on) still holds the record for the thinnest hand wound mechanical movement made, as theirs is 1.85mm as used in the Jubilee Master Ultra Thin series currently in production.

    Whatever the details, these ultra thin marvels are a defining moment in the mechanical watchmaking art. Thank you for shedding so much more light on this special complication.
